Don't try this at home (Birthday Cake Fiasco)

I think that I may perhaps be way too nice to my kids or I might feel guilty that I spent all last summer in cake decorating class and rarely make cake. Whatever it is I was definitely a little crazy this time. I told my children that they could have whatever kind of cake they wanted for their birthdays. My son decided he wanted a golden snitch in Griffindor colors (he is very into Harry Potter right now). I looked online for ideas and saw that someone had created a 3D snitch and used candy melt to form wings. I thought to myself- I can do that. - yeah right.

This is actually a picture of my second attempt. I had the cake all ready to go, complete with accurate coloring when my two-year old decided it needed the lid on it. This caused a collision with the side of the cake and the lid. You can see where the icing is smeared. I had to rewrite happy birthday and straighten it out as best I could. I then attempted to attached my beautifully made wings which were unfortunately two delicate and fell apart when I slide them into the cake. My second attempt at wings were sturdier but after this picture was taken they also collapsed leaving gashes in the side of the cake.- Too sad.

After my frustrations we opted for paper. It was at about this time that my son told me that the wings on the snitch are actually almost clear. - Too late. Fortunately he loved it anyway and thought his mom was the best for trying. You gotta love kids. I know I love mine. Maybe his sister's cake will be easier. Now if I just had more people to eat it all.
